Prizes

Prizes for academic and sporting achievement have been awarded at Speech Days (now Awards Night) since 1913.

As the school had no hall, the Parramatta Town Hall was rented for the ceremony. School was closed for the day and many dignitaries, such as the Minister for Public Instruction, the Lord Mayor and others,attended the function.

Here is a list of prizes which over the years have been presented to our students. The list is by no means definitive.

W L Atkins Memorial Prize for First in the HSC: Named in honour of the first Principal of Parramatta High School (1913-1933), William Leonard Atkins (Tommy). Originally donated in 1954 by the Rotary Club of Parramatta.
E. R. Brown Prize for Second in the HSC: Originally donated by Miss Essie Brown - a former teacher of the school and given to the female who achieved the best mark in the Leaving Certificate; now awarded for 2nd in the HSC. Sponsored by the Leaving Certificate Class of 1962 since 2003.
J R Croswell Prize for First in History: Named in Honour of John Robert Croswell, a foundation pupil of the school and teacher from 1939 to 1959.
Aurelius Evans Prize: Donated by parents, staff and pupils in 1957 to perpetuate the memory of the late Mr Aurelius Evans, Science Master at Parramatta High School for 16 years. Now awarded for First in Chemistry.
Ex-Students Association Prize for Boy and Girl School Captain: Donated by the ex-students of Parramatta High School.
MWA Cullen Memorial Medal for School Service: Named in honour of the late Mr MWA Cullen, Science Master 1957-1967. Sponsored by the Leaving Certificate Class of 1962.
Allan & Graeme Morgan Prize: Donated by Mr Clifford Morgan in 1958 in appreciation of the education afforded by Parramatta High School to his sons, Allan & Graeme. Originally given for Leaving Certificate Maths II. Now sponsored by Allan & Graeme Morgan.
Edith Mackaness Prize: Donated in 1958 by Miss Edith Mackaness who served as a teacher at Parramatta High School from 1925 to 1957. Originally awarded for Leaving Certificate, General Mathematics.
Sheridan Memorial Prize for First in Modern History: Donated in 1945 in the memory of Captain Albert H. Sheridan and Corporal George Sheridan. Both ex-students at Parramatta High School who were killed during WWII. The prize was donated by Mrs Jessie Sheridan, widow of Captain Sheridan and Mrs AJ Sheridan, mother of both soldiers. Now sponsored by the Leaving Certificate Class of 1949.
Syd Adams Memorial Prize: Donated in 2003 in memory of the Late Mr Sydney Adams, a teacher and head teacher at the school. Awarded for excellence and enthusiasm in Science.
Rose Margaret Macauley Prize for First in French: Donated in 1953 from funds collected by the school, ex-students and the public to perpetuate the memory of the late Rose Margaret Macauley who was a teacher at Parramatta High School for 28 years.
Lilian Whiteoak Prize: Originally donated in 1967 by Miss Lilian Whiteoak for First in the Intermediate Certificate. Now awarded for First in the School Certificate.
Goodwin Packer Prize: Donated by Goodwin Packer for Excellence in Shakespearian Studies. Mr Packer is an ex-student of the school and long serving teacher and head teacher English at Parramatta High School.
1943/44 Ex-students Award: Donated by students from 1943/44 Leaving Certificate in appreciation of the education they received at Parramatta High School.
1958 Ex-Students Prize: Donated in 2004 by the students of the 1958 Leaving Certificate for service to the school and community.
LC1960 Ex-Students Prize for Most Outstanding Student In Year 12. Donated in 2004 by the Leaving Certificate Class of 1960 in recognition of the education they received at Parramatta High School.
John S. Croucher Prize: Donated in 2003 by Professor John S. Croucher an ex-student. Awarded for excellence in Mathematics.
Sarah Hilton Memorial Prize: Donated by Mr and Mrs Hilton in memory of their daughter Sarah who, when a student at Parramatta High School, displayed great enthusiasm and ability in her studies of Indonesian.
Caltex Best Allrounder Award: Donated by Caltex Australia and awarded to the student who has achieved most across a number of areas in their time at school.
Rueben F Scarf Award for Commitment: Donated by Reuben F Scarf Foundation and awarded to the student who has shown exceptional commitment to their studies at Parramatta High School.
