1946 First XI Premiers

Back row: Gordon Wilkins (bowler), Keith Lego (batsman), Ian Black (all rounder), Douglas Milner (batsman), Warwick Dunn (all rounder), Wilfred Ewens (batsman).
Front row: Harold Goodwin (batsman), Kevin Quinn (wicketkeeper/batsman), Mr P.N.Tester (coach), Richie Benaud (captain - all rounder), Raymond Caterson (bowler), Kenneth Kirkness (all rounder).

Who is the wee lad holding the crossed bats?
The young chap is indeed the scorekeeper - Malcolm Lehman

Our thanks to Doug Milner for identifiying him.

The team remained undefeated throughout the competition with some outstanding performances from the likes of Benaud and Quinn. Both lads scored the only centuries of the competition and received a "school blue" when chosen for CHS representation. The 1947 Phoenix reported that

"...to Benaud must go the highest praise. He was an excellent captain and inspiration to the team. It is doubtful if any school-boy has performed so well in High School cricket."

Benaud was selected for the NSWCA and NSW second eleven teams and it was predicted that he would go on to greater things.

It is interesting to note that the premiership shield was not able to be displayed in the school hall as it had been "misplaced" by Sydney Boys High School. It was the first premiership win for the school since 1927.

27 years later, Kevin Quinn would write of these events in a letter published in the 1963 Golden Jubilee Phoenix. Read it here. (42k)

For many years this photograph hung with pride in the school foyer but had disappeared. Our sincere thanks to Harold Goodwin who donated a copy to the school archives. The photograph came to him by way of Percy Tester, a few months before his passing. The world moves in mysterious ways...
