1928 Girls Basketball team
and a nice old motor car.

Further evidence of the progressive nature of Parramatta High School.
How many schools of 1928 could boast a Girls Basketball team?
This is the "A"s -- we also fielded a "B" grade team.

Update: 2 October 2009

Well, a few as it turns out. In an article for the Daily Telegraph, Maureen Shelley, wrote that:
"A form of netball, or women's basketball, had been played in Australia since the 1890s with girls' schools adopting the sport in 1910. It was considered a suitable sport for women in that it maintained femininity and decorum. (Something that would have pleased Miss Macakaness - that's her in the front row, second from the right - keeper of girls' morals at the school - Ed).

Ms Shelley continues:
"A formal association in Parramatta was established during the 1940s, although girls played netball at Parramatta High School in the 1920s..."

Incidentally... you will see, top left, a car of the vintage with two cheeky poppets standing beside it watching proceedings. Below is an enlarged shot of that portion of the photo.

What chance this is Mr Atkins' motor? My best guess is that it is a Citroen, possibly 1924, but I would welcome corrections from better informed sources.
