This photograph has been donated by Frances Bull (nee Oakes) who attended Parramatta High School from 1920 to 1923. Her parents found it necessary for her to leave school to go to work (a common occurrence). It was a decision which she regretted profoundly all her life.

Frances went to work in the office of Murdochs, a large emporium near Town Hall station. In 1930 she married Hector Alexander Bull who lived not far from her home in Fairfield West where he had a vineyard. She became very involved in the vineyard and enjoyed working there particularly in the grape season. Today Fairfield West is a well populated suburb.

Frances became involved in the school again in 1948, when her daugther Mary enrolled. She was a tireless worker for the Ladies Auxillary and was its president in 1963 - the school's Golden Jubilee year. Mr and Mrs Bull donated a prize and for many years attended Speech Day as distinguished guests. The Frances Bull Prize for First in English is still awarded today.

Frances is seated next her best friend, Julie Hopman, sister of Harry Hopman. They kept in touch for many years and as adults played in the same hockey team up until 1929.

We would like to thank Jean Stewart (nee Bull) LC1952 who provided us with this information.
